Baku – the city where much of the action takes place – is on the Western tip of Azerbeidshan, directly across the Caspian Sea from Russia. Geography is an important element to understanding the plot, so a world map from the period might be worth looking up (though not necessary, the author does a pretty good job of explaining the small nation’s precarious situation). ![]() It begins on the eve of the Bolshevik revolution and ends with Azerbeidshan part of the Soviet Union. Of these, the most successful is language, which allows women to kill the myth of Woman and to abolish the class of women. Russ's literary war machine deploys various weapons against the Straight Mind. Widely acknowledged as Joanna Russs masterpiece, The Female Man is the suspenseful, surprising, darkly witty, and boldly subversive chronicle of what. Joanna becomes the female man by appropriating language and therefore "resolv contrarieties, unit them in her own person," and in this way she destroys gender as Witting describes by "lay claim to universality." Russ contrasts Joanna's solution with the alternative worlds inhabited by Janet (on the all-women utopian Whileaway) and by the cyborg Jael (on the dystopian world of warring Manland and Womanland). ![]() In responding to the straight mind and to the consequences of being the female Other, one character from "our world," Joanna, changes into a female man. She also shows two alternative worlds that further undermine, but do not solve, the way heterosexual institutions regulate gender. ![]() The novel functions as what Monique Witting calls a "literary war machine" because it tries "to pulverize the old forms and formal conventions." Specifically, Russ critiques the "straight mind"-heterosexual institutions that regulate gender-by showing how two representatives from "our world" respond to those institutions. In "The Female Man" Russ contrasts our present-day heterosexual society with two revolutionary alternatives: a utopian world of women and a dystopian world of women warring with men. ![]() ![]() The result is a novel that spans an entire century and becomes more exhilarating with each new revelation. Dühring, privatdocent at Berlin University, suddenly and rather clamorously announced his conversion to Socialism, and presented the German public not only with an elaborate Socialist theory, but also with a complete practical plan for the reorganization of society. The present little book is, originally, part of a larger whole. ![]() ![]() * * * 1892 English Edition Introduction General Introduction and the History of Materialism He explains the relationship between previously-existing types of socialism, which ultimately considered the reorganization of society as a question of appealing to the better sentiments of the ruling class, and that of Marxism, which recognizes the material basis for the antagonism between capitalist and worker, and, with the aid of this knowledge, seeks to reorganize society through the class struggle. In this popular pamphlet, Engels describes the greatest accomplishment of Marxism - that of transferring Socialism from the realm of abstract morality and basing it upon the laws and potentialities of the world as it exists. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Escaping from Houdini was an insult to my emotions, my sanity, and the very heroes Kerri Maniscalco so lovingly created.
